Floor drains in basements, garages, laundry rooms and utility areas are connected to the same system as the rest of your plumbing, so when the line is blocked or overloaded they can push wastewater up onto the floor. The water is often dirty and carries waste, and it can spread under stored items, appliances and walls before anyone notices.
Floor drain backup cleanup in Philadelphia, PA involves removing the wastewater and debris, cleaning and disinfecting the floor and nearby surfaces, and drying the area so moisture does not linger. Since a repeat backup is likely if the underlying blockage remains, it is worth having the drain and sewer line checked once the cleanup is complete.
Floor drain backups often show up where you are least likely to look. A laundry room, a garage or a utility area can fill with dirty water overnight, and boxes, tools, water heaters and furnaces sitting on the floor can be damaged or contaminated before the problem is found. Clearing the area and keeping electrical equipment away from standing water reduces the risk while you wait for help.
Backups tied to appliance use are a clue. If a drain overflows when the washing machine drains or when someone runs several fixtures at once, the main line may be partly blocked. Property owners in Philadelphia, PA who see this pattern should have the line inspected, because cleaning up without fixing the blockage usually means cleaning up again.
